Sweet Sixteen 007 – The Slow Waves

Sweet Sixteen 007 - The Slow Waves

The Slow Waves are one of the principle reasons I wanted to start Main Course. My good friend Matty C was making amazing music that I wanted everyone to hear. He’s a bit of an enigma, in terms of musical identity: An established international Drum & Bass producer in the late 90s. A versatile party rock DJ in the late 2000s, playing all sorts of bottle service clubs, and one of the coolest house & electro nights in Vancouver ‘Fast Life, where we really got to know eachother. That ultimately lead to us creating and defining the White Light Mixes series together. A real conduit in the Vancouver scene, an undeniable talent and student of music, which this playlist really illustrates. To me, it seems like The Slow Waves is a reflection of life; its changes and challenges, and it ‘hit’ me at the right time too. I was struck, and moved. There are so many great originals, remixes and releases set to come together that we can’t wait to share with the world. I hope this Sweet Sixteen helps provide some insight into the mind of Matty C and The Slow Waves.

One of the great things about writing music is that it allows you to dabble in multiple personality disorder if that’s what interests you. What you create one day might be drastically different to what came the day before or after. Sometimes, after a while, certain moments can achieve a cohesiveness that can turn into an artist’s “sound” or “______ period”. I’ve always been interested in making multiple styles of music, but right now The Slow Waves sound is what resonates most in my head. This is a sort of audio scrap-book of influences that I was listening to around the time I “came of age”, and 15/20 years later I still draw inspiration from these songs, they immediately take me back to youth and the spirit of the unknown, when I had life a little less figured out and alot to learn. This is.. Route 403

Listen to the sounds escaped, from the mechanical resistance – ‘african mining’ & ‘indastria’. What we have here folks, is the new tomorrow.

Bot is Andrea Fratangelo, a UK based, Italian-born producer who until recently was a member of one of the biggest electronic groups of the past decade. Bot joins Neoteric and Astronomar to bring you Main Course.

Here are Main Course, we’re proud fathers. 2 Italians with a penchant for techno bass unleash their first ever release, and we couldnt be happier with the result. ‘Triplete’ is a raucous stomper driven by triplet rhythms and a strong, pulsing lead. ‘The Hood’ transports one straight to the Main Stage; An Undeniable MONSTER of a track. Freshness Guaranteed!

2D Noize (Maik & Kosmik) hail from Salento, in the south of Italy. Both competitive tunrtablists, Party Rockers and now official Studio masters, 2D Noize aim to Synthesize. Who are you, where are you from, and what did you have for dinner?

We are  2D Noize, an italian duo from Italy; we love to make Techno bass music all day long and eat “frisella” and tomatoes for dinner.

Tell us something people might not know about you. What you’re working on, or what you’d like people to know about..

We started to play and mix records when we were 14 years old, with the classic technics 1210 which are the instruments that we still use for our DJ sets. We like to create our own original sounds in studio and mix them with Logic; we often spent full days or nigths working on just one single synth ’till we find the sound we like. Currently we are working on new songs and some of them are ready to go.

What are your current fixations?

There are several things, including the historical ones: everything about the sound of the 90s and the Italian b-movie of 70s. The obsession of the moment is definitely the digital synthesis, create our personal digital synths using softwares like MAX/MSP or Reaktor.

Name something, music related or otherwise, that has changed your life.

We grew up listening to Detroit Techno, Chicago house, jungle but also a lot of soul, funk and blues. Let’s say that we  hear a lot of music without necessarily following a genre in particular and we have a lot of beautiful vinyls at home that we still buy. If we were to think of two albums definitely essentials: Jelly Tones by Ken Ishii and Experience by The Prodigy.

What should everyone shut up about?

No one could say that during our dj set someone is sitting down… and absolutely we never used sync.

What’s coming up next for you?

Certainly our first EP out on Main Course on 18th of June. (save the date!) Then we’ll come out with a track called ‘Thumbs up’ that gives the name to the album of an upcoming female singer. The song will be released this summer  as single. The album features collaborations with international veteran producers like Adrian Sherwood, Asian Dub Foundation and many other. There is new stuff we are working on and we’re looking forward to release it.

Who are you, where are you from, and what did you have for dinner?

I am Andrea Fratangelo aka Bot, born in Milan and living in London. Last night’s dinner was a big one at my favourite italian place in London. It consisted in raw seafood carpaccio, fresh Sardinian pasta with clams and roe and Halibut with red peppers and anchovies.

Tell us something people might not know about you. What you’re working on, or what you’d like people to know about..

The name Bot comes from a time when all I did was writing it everywhere and get into trouble for that. The medium has changed now and the risks involved too but I’m still doing the same thing, trying to develop a unique style and have fun at what I do.

What are your current fixations?

I’m fixated with modern physics big time lately. My knowledge is still at an amateur level so I’m trying to read as much as I can that I can understand but that stuff is mind-blowing. I’m a bit mad we are still taught about the world around us in a simplified and not very interesting way.

Name something, music related or otherwise, that has changed your life.

Rap Metal, a pretty bad chapter in music history (with only a few exceptions) from the early 90′s but that triggered a huge change for me, both personally and musically.

What should everyone shut up about?

Nothing, it’s easy to choose not to read or listen to someone. I don’t feel entitled to tell anyone to shut up, babies on this train being the only exception… If I don’t like what someone’s saying I simply stop listening… or unfollow!

SNACKS001 – Astronomar & Bot – Ghettobox

Who are you, where are you from, and what did you have for dinner?

My name is Mar, I’m from Alaska, and I had sautéed red bell pepper, broccoli and carrots for dinner. And a box of raisinetts. Haha

Tell us something people might not know about you. What you’re working on, or what you’d like people to know about..

All of my tracks contain live foot claps. Right now I’m working on a gang of remixes, a few originals, and a handful of collaborations.

What are your current fixations?

Recently I can’t stop going to the three dollar movie theater down the street, and listening to Kool Keith’s “Personal Album”

Name something, music related or otherwise, that has changed your life.

Being cussed out by Obama.

What should everyone shut up about?

Hashtags on Facebook. Stop that shit.

What’s coming up next for you?

Lots of music and some DJ sets around the country and some international dates in the works
